The ancient city of Uthina
lies about thirty kilometers from the south, on a knoll overlooking the main
access routes to Carthage from the south and west of the country.
Uthina extends over about a hundred hectares, dotted with majestic constructions, including the capitol, the largest in Africa, the Roman cisterns, the private and public thermal baths, vestiges of patrician villas, and an amphitheatre with a capacity of more than 10.000 spectators.
This archeological site is still under excavation.
The scenery is unforgettable;
the vestiges are very interesting for the fans of the Roman Empire. The foundation seems to date to the Berber period as attested by the place
name. Following the course of History, it became Punic then Roman before being
briefly Vandal and Byzantin, then falling into final decline after the Arab
conquest in the VIIth century.
